Former Johannesburg lass Aaliyah Chaboo, 23, scooped the coveted Zee TV Miss India SA 2019 title at the Durban City Hall on 7 December after she was earlier placed second in the Miss India Gauteng Pageant.
The 23-year-old marketing student and business entrepreneur hopes to break into Bollywood with assistance from Zee TV, which has done this for previous winners.
Chaboo will now compete against national winners from a host of other countries in Mumbai in October next year for the Miss India Worldwide title.
The 28th edition of the Miss India SA Pageant was tinged with some sadness as the founder, veteran journalist Farook Khan, passed on a few months ago. The event was dedicated to his memory.
Among those who paid tribute to Khan were the Chairman and founder of the Miss India Worldwide Pageant, Dharmatma Saran, who flew in from New York; the reigning Miss India Worldwide, Tanishq Sharma, who flew in from Mumbai; and the new CEO of Miss India SA, Kamisha Nanhoo Maharaj, who pledged to persevere and grow the Miss India South Africa  brand in memory of Khan.
