Hindi teachers from across Gauteng have formed an association for the promotion of the language in the province.
At the inaugural meeting in Midrand on November 23, 15 teachers discussed the way forward for innovative ways to promote Hindi in Gauteng, apart from all the tried and tested campaigns, teacher training, senior student’s enrichment programme, participation in the annual Hindi Diwas and other social activities that have been taking place already.
The teachers have been involved in classes at various venues in the province for students who write the examinations of the Hindi Shiksha Sangh of South Africa.
The Gauteng initiative followed a workshop held earlier in Durban, facilitated by Professor Vinaye Goodary, on the way ahead of Hindi teaching and methodologies in the changing world of digital language and relevant South African literature that would be therapeutic to learners.
The Gauteng teachers felt that they also have much to contribute to the development and promotion of Hindi and could lend a huge hand to the Hindi Shiksha Sangh in forging ahead with the new Mission and Vision of the Sangh in revitalising Hindi in the country.
Benoni resident Virjanand Garrib, a stalwart Hindi teacher in the region, who was responsible to rekindle the awareness of Hindi in Gauteng together with Heeralall Sewnath as joint heads of the Gauteng branch of the Hindi Shiksha Sangh for many years, announced his retirement from public life due to ill health at the meeting.
Romilla Ramgathi who studied under the leader popularly known as ‘Garribbhai’ presented him with a bouquet for having guided her to achieve success over several years in the advanced exams of the Sangh.
