The Abu Asvat Institute for Nation Building in conjunction with Azanian People’s Organisation (AZAPO) hosted a commemorative ceremony to honour and speak about life of freedom fighter Dr. Abu Baker Asvat. The discussion included Steve Biko’s legacy.
It was a sad day for the Asvat family 31-years-ago, when the popular doctor was killed in his Soweto surgery on 27th January. He was a founding member of AZAPO.
Speakers spoke on Dr. Asvat and Biko, both from the same political party. It’s 40 years since Biko was brutally killed, also fighting for his community and freedom of this country.
Dr. Asvat treated many black South Africans and his aim was to have his surgery in the hub of Soweto. His death is a mystery yet to be solved.
AZAPO’s former president and guest speaker Dr. Saths Cooper addressed the crowd where he, in a sad tone, said: “The leadership of this country still refuse to acknowledge what happened in Dr. Asvat’s surgery the day he was brutally killed.”
AZAPO and the Asvat family still struggle to get answers behind the death but are not giving up on finding them.
