Power of 1000’s third annual Teachers’ Breakfast

The most current local and international school effectiveness research places teachers as key to learner performance and school outcomes. Consequently the Power of 1000 held the first Lenz High Teachers’ Breakfast three years ago at the onset of the 2018 academic year to acknowledge the excellent work of Lenz High’s teachers. The breakfast offers Lenz High and the Power of 1000 a platform to talk about pressing issues and to reconnect after the summer holidays.
The third annual Power of 1000 Lenz High Teachers’ Breakfast was held on the 14th January in the school hall. Power of 1000’s chairperson, Mumtaz Khan, kick started the breakfast with a short welcome which was followed by the keynote address.  Haroon Wadee, a health economist was the key note speaker. He talked about the significance of creating a learning and teaching environment that will allow learners to feel part of a caring network of friends, colleagues and teachers. He drew on the rich data from his PhD which underscored that the rise in addiction, suicides and mental health can be linked to people feeling alienated from their homes, families, schools and communities.  He also emphasized that learners need to be taught to adapt in a fast changing world.
Urvashi Bhika, the secretary of the Power of 1000 conducted a speed vision exercise and teachers were served a scrumptious breakfast prepared by Café Dulce situated at LenMed. During the speed vision exercise, teachers got to share fifteen personal insights with their different colleagues. They had one minute to share their thoughts on each of the fifteen specific topics.
The highlight of the breakfast was cutting and enjoying the cake in celebration of the 65th anniversary of the school. Lenz High is the oldest high school in Lenasia. Aslam Moosajee delivered the closing address, congratulated the school on the excellent results achieved by its Class of 2019 and wished the school another successful year.
“The mediocre teacher tells.
The good teacher explains.
The superior teacher demonstrates.
The great teacher inspires.” William Arthur Ward.
Power of 1000 remains committed to bringing out the greatness in our teachers.
