Alleged illegal shack dwellers were caught by surprise on Wednesday, 15th January 2020 when JMPD POP, SAPS POP and private contractors made their way to Takolia’s Farm on Nirvana Drive, Extension 9 to break down shacks built there.
More than 40 of the shacks built on what’s considered private land were demolished. Dwellers belongings were broken down as well by the private contractors.
This came after a meeting with the court’s Sheriff Mr. Khumalo, held on Friday, January 10, 2020. Mr. Khumalo told the dwellers that they will come and evict them from the farm.
The situation was volatile at the beginning when police arrived and simmered down while contractors were doing their work, but police were keeping an eye, making sure that residents did not disrupt the flow of traffic or the police work.
Wayne Minnaar, JMPD spokesperson said: “JMPD officers are currently monitoring the traffic flow along Nirvana Drive in Extension 9 Lenasia, where the Sheriff of the court produced an eviction order for the removal of approximately 40 illegal shacks. A private contractor is being used for the removal of the illegal structures. JMPD will continue to monitor the area today.”
