Former MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, has launched a voluntary reading project called Our Reading Tree (ORT).
ORT aims to promote individual reading and learning.
“We collect old books from people and distribute to schools, education groups and to individuals who love to read, particularly children, students and youth,” said Vadi.
He thanked the following people for their kind support that enabled Our Reading Tree Project to get started:
• Mr Billy Morgan (retired school principal and former Chairperson of SADTU - Lenasia Branch and the Progressive Teachers’ League)
• ANC Councillor Zarina and Mr Rashid Motala
• Jamiatul-Ulema (Lenasia Branch)
• (Maulana)Habib Bobat
• The late Ahmed “Mousie” Mia and Mrs Fatima Mia
• Mr and Mrs Essop Dockrat
• Ms Fatima Goondiwalla (retired educator)
• Serial Thriller Jhb (book shop)
• Ms Hafisa Badat and
• Zerina and Zaakirah Vadi.
Vadi responded positively to a local media report calling for educational materials for the Khusanani Youth Development Forum that runs tuition for learners in Vlakfontein and Thembelihle, south of Johannesburg. The ORT donated two boxes of books to the Forum.
The Forum’s Alfred Machete said that it needed books for a community library and to assist learners with their studies.
Machete thanked the ORT for the support given to the Forum so quickly.
