The Department of Education districts - JHB Central and JHB South - both held celebratory events for their respective 2019 matric achievers.
JHB Central, of which many Lenasian schools are affiliated to, held its awards evening on 31st January at the Nurul Islam Hall whilst the JHB South ceremony was on 7th February at the Jasmine Hills Country Venue, Eikenhof.
Notable Lenasian accomplishments for JHB Central saw four SBSM learners and two teachers awarded; an accolade for a Nurul Islam educator and two for the school itself - Top Achieving School and Top Independent School with a 100% pass rate; Lenz Public Secondary received a prize for significant improvement in pass rate; Lenasia Secondary School were placed 4th in Top Achieving Schools winning too Top Educator awards for Geography and Life Sciences; Park Primary also received a Top Educator 2019 Natural Science/Technology Award.
The Lenasian schools affiliated to JHB South were stellar as well. Al Aqsa School came 1st, for overall performance, highest bachelor pass in the district and another 100% pass rate. Al Aqsa were also awarded 1st place in January at the Gauteng Awards, top for Independent Schools – JHB South.
Their neighbours and friendly rivals, Lenasia Muslim School (LMS), also received a 100% pass rate award whilst a teacher and three learners received specialised honours. LMS matriculants bagged 3 of the top 5 positions for top performing learners in the Independent Schools Category. Their Zahra Cassim attained 4th, whilst her classmate Iman Jhetam won the Life Orientation subject award. LMS educator Apa Saheera Khan won the Subject Educator Award for Business Studies in the District.
The highlight though for LMS at the glitzy Jasmine Hills venue was, when for the third successive year, their student won the prestigious Dux Award for the JHB South District. This time it went to Aarifah Loonat, who narrowly beat her LMS classmate Iman Jhetam to it. Readers of Lenasia Times would’ve noticed in an article elsewhere in this edition that Jhetam had finished ahead of Loonat in the other prestigious inter schools awards – finishing as the Association of Muslim Schools (AMS) overall Top Student. The reason she was 2nd to her good friend Loonat at the JHB South ceremony however is due to the fact that the District and AMS use different criteria when determining their respective top student. Both Aarifah and Iman are worthy winners either way and have equally done their school and Principal Apa Nazreen Suliman immensely proud.
Principal Suliman’s former school, Southview Secondary, also had a proud moment when their top learner, Nishka Singh was amongst public schools top 5 pupils.
Willowmead Secondary won the most improved SSIP honour, with a learner and teacher from it also awarded. Redwood Academy pupil Ali-Mahommed Tar-Mahomed scooped two accolades. Awards were also won by learners from Azara Secondary, Qalabotjha Secondary and Vlakfontein.
