R30 000 ‘bribe’ allegedly offered to avoid arrest & cigarettes confiscated in Lenasia

The three foreign nationals & two 'buyers' who were arrested on 2nd May for allegedly not complying with the Disaster Management Regulation Act of Covid-19 Lockdown.

Five suspects aged between 32 and 40 years were arrested on Saturday, 2nd May 2020, for allegedly not complying with the Disaster Management Regulation Act, by members of the Soweto Flying Squad. They received information about three foreign nationals who were said to be selling cigarettes at Murzooq Centre, Rose Avenue, Ext. 2, Lenasia. 
A fifth 40-year-old suspect was doubled charged for alleged bribery “of R30 000 which was to assist freeing the other four suspects from being detained at the Lenasia SAPS cells”. 
Soweto Flying Squad spokesperson W/O Shadrack Molathegi said: “Members proceeded to the above given address, observed the premises and saw two African males entering the building,” adding that as they exited, “they came out carrying boxes in their hands. Members immediately acted and searched the two customers, discovering they had purchased cigarettes from the shop”. 
“Our members then questioned the two males and they confirmed to have bought the cigarettes. On further investigations members found more boxes in the premises,” stated W/O Molathegi.
He explained that the money was booked in at Lenasia SAPS together with the cigarettes valued at R250 000. 
All the suspects were detained at Lenasia SAPS for further investigation into the matter and they appeared before the Magisterial District Court of Lenasia and will soon appear there again for a formal bail application.
