SASSA grant collections started on 4th May 2020 at the different official grant outlets nationally.
Lenasia Times took the opportunity to visit some points where grants were being collected by the elderly and young people. Queues were long and started from before 6am where people were standing for hours in the queue to either go to a bank ATM, Shoprite, Post Office, or any SASSA outlet. Grant collectors complained about not having a proper facility to sit or any shade. Unfortunately, some elderly people were facing difficulty standing in the bare sun and fainted and some were getting sick standing for hours. It was difficult to even see social distancing as the queues were so long that people were struggling to stand one meter apart.
