Three police officers, Sgt. Simon Scorpion Ndyalvane, 46-years-old; Cst. Caylene Whiteboy, 23-years-old; and Detective Sgt. Vorster Netshiongolo, 37-years-old, appeared for a second time before the magistrate in Court 10 at Protea Magistrates Court on 10th September. Their case has been remanded to 22nd September for a formal bail application and all three accused still remain in custody. This emanates after it is alleged that they fatally shot Nathaniel “Lokies” Julies (16), a down syndrome teenager who was standing next to a truck eating biscuits at Hilbrow Flat across his home in Eldorado Park on 26th August.
Sgt. Ndyalvane, Cst. Caylene Whiteboy were arrested on 28th August after an urgent investigation was compiled by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) and a third suspect, a detective, Sgt. Netshiongolo was arrested on 1st September. They all are police members from the Eldorado Park SAPS.
The first two accused appeared in court on 31st August and are facing charges of the following: premediated murder, unlawful possession of firearm, discharging a firearm in public space, defeating the ends of justice; and the third accused, appeared in court on 3rd September and is facing charges of defeating the ends of justice and accessory after the fact (murder). They all remained in custody.
Lokies was laid to rest on Saturday, 5th September. Residents took to the streets in numbers to mourn his death and say their last goodbyes to the teenager who could not speak but was full of life. It was a happy and sad occasion for the family as his mum Bridgette also celebrated her birthday on the same day and they had to say their last goodbyes to Nathaniel.
Angry Eldorado Park residents took to the streets on 27th August in Old Eldos and at the police station due to the killing of Nathaniel. Furious residents blocked off Turf Road and burnt tyres, threw stones and also tried to set alight police vehicles a few times.
The residents said they were fed up with the alleged corruption at the police station and the person(s) responsible for Nathaniel’s death needed to be brought to justice.
Angry residents kept saying: “Why shoot to kill? What harm was this boy posing for them to kill him?”
