Shahista Thokan's 'There's Always a Silver Lining'

Let us change the topic

As human beings, we thrive on curiosity. When we are curious, we are more open to exposing ourselves to different ideas. As a result, our appreciation for life increases. There are several platforms that can feed this curiosity for example, the news, social media and conversation. We are easily influenced by the happenings within our surroundings and form deep emotional connections with experiences which we are exposed to. Sometimes it can be a prolonged exposure to the same negative information and therefore in order to renew our optimistic spirit we need to stop seeing the world through printed headlines and the word of soothsayers.
Of course, it will be difficult under these special circumstances, but all we can do is try to shift the focus of our minds to a cleared path of happier times. Nostalgia from the ‘good old days’ and the memories we have forgotten. Science says that recalling these moments can cause the body to release dopamine and actually improve our overall wellbeing. Over and above the immune boosters and vitamin C regimes we can include improving our mental health which serves as a catalyst to feeling good.
It is almost guaranteed that the fond reminiscing about our past, special people whom resided in them, beautiful occasions and the flashbacks of rebellion and naughtiness will bring a smile upon our faces. Research has shown that reminiscing improves behavioural functioning, lessens depression and improves cognition that also enhances feelings of control and mastery over life. This treasure chest of hidden gems opens up a family tree of biographies and folk tales that the future generations would love to hear about. Positive affirmations of courage, persistence and growth will serve to be inspiring for their journeys.
Sometimes all it takes is a perspective to change and finding moments worth living for, it also takes compartmentalizing the regrets or worries which present itself. There is a lot to be said about living in the moment though, the adrenaline when executing the actions from your thoughts and risk-taking. It is a different lifestyle which requires intrinsic motivation and affirmations. Affirmations in context are primarily a practice of self-empowerment, fostering a belief that a positive mindset will ultimately achieve success. They form part of the New Age terminology which works with the replacement of negative beliefs and conditioning.
It forms a basis of the coaching model which helps individuals build themselves up with positive, loving and helpful phrases. When individuals acknowledge their own influence on their results, behaviours and relationships, then only are they better able to function as a whole within society. Being a ‘work-in-progress’ can be a forgiving term from which we begin at and affirms our position to improve and influence. Finding happiness through the discovery of ‘who we are’ and our contributions is a life lived on purpose. So let’s change the narrative by changing the topics which are causing us displeasure.
“Train your mind to see the good in everything. Positivity is a choice. The happiness of your life depends on the quality of your thoughts.”
