The bridge on the Abubaker Asvat Drive (R554) is in dire need of immediate repairs with further visible cracks and damages.

The discussions around the solutions and conditions of the bridge were amongst the topics highlighted on 2nd September at the CivActs Meeting in Lenasia.

The Action for Accountability A4A is a CivActs project co-funded by the European Union and implemented by the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Accountability Lab South Africa and the Public Service Accountability Monitor.

Teams from the Johannesburg Roads Agency and Department of Environmental Affairs have been conducting inspections of the bridge, which runs across the Oupa Fats wetlands, during the last few weeks.

Community Facilitator Zarina Motala said: “Teams have been doing inspections around the bridge.

“We are aware that the mining silt is clogging the water beneath the bridge and water from Oupa Fats Wetlands is stagnant. This will cause overflowing and we need to resolve this problem.”

She elaborated: “The reeds which are part of the wetlands must also be maintained or they will be clogging the flow of water with the summer rains (approaching) and this will cause another flood.”

The Action for Accountability project aims to support communities  through better governance as South Africa struggles with an accountability crises. They are looking for community members who champion human rights, so if you are interested in being part of this team, please contact Zarina Motala on 071-851-3627.
