Gauteng police have intensified investigations following the discovery of a woman's body in an open veld near Rhokana Road in Springs on Sunday, 27 September 2026.
According to SAPS Provincial Spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, members of SAPS Springs responded to the scene at approximately 12pm after a security company patrol vehicle spotted the body and alerted authorities.
The discovery prompted the immediate mobilisation of several specialised units, including the Task Team investigating the Ekurhuleni murder cases, Crime Scene Management, Investigative Psychology Services (IPS), detectives and Crime Intelligence.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, attended the scene as investigations got underway.
Addressing the media, Mthombeni said preliminary findings suggest the deceased was a young woman believed to be in her early twenties.
"The victim was found partially unclothed, with her top lifted and her trousers still on. She was lying on her back and there are indications that she may have been strangled," said Mthombeni.
He further noted that the body was not in an advanced state of decomposition, indicating that the murder may have occurred recently.
"The body is not decomposed. I can confirm that the victim was found not fully clothed," he said.
Forensic experts continued processing the crime scene while investigators worked to establish the identity of the deceased and determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
Police have not yet confirmed whether the case is linked to the series of murders currently under investigation in Ekurhuleni. However, the deployment of the specialised task team highlights the seriousness with which authorities are treating the matter.
SAPS has appealed to anyone who may have information that could assist investigators to come forward.
At the time of publication, preliminary investigations were ongoing and police indicated that further details would be released as more information becomes available.
