The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has expressed deep sorrow following the untimely death of Security Officer Kwanele Buthelezi, 34, who served within the department.
JMPD spokesperson confirmed that Officer Buthelezi was a highly regarded member of the department's security personnel and clarified that he was employed as a security officer, not a Metro Police Officer. His passing has left colleagues and members of the JMPD family devastated.
According to the department, Officer Buthelezi was off duty at the time of the incident. While details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain limited, a murder case has been opened at the relevant South African Police Service (SAPS) station and an investigation is underway.
The JMPD has described the loss as a tragic blow and extended its sincere condolences to Officer Buthelezi's family, friends and colleagues during this difficult period.
The department has also appealed to anyone who may have information that could assist investigators to come forward and cooperate with SAPS as efforts continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As investigations progress, the JMPD says it remains committed to supporting the bereaved family and ensuring that justice is pursued for its fallen colleague.
