Tragic Search Ends as Missing 11-Year-Old's Body Recovered from Kgotjane River

After days of uncertainty and heartbreak, the body of an 11-year-old boy who was reported missing after allegedly drowning in the Kgotjane River has been recovered, bringing a measure of closure to his grieving family.

According to Free State SAPS Provincial Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, the young boy was reported missing on 19 September 2026 after friends who were with him allegedly witnessed him being swept away by the river's waters.

In the days that followed, members of the Phuthaditjhaba police, working alongside the Maluti-a-Phofung Municipality Rescue and Divers Team, launched an extensive search operation. Despite their determined efforts, challenging weather conditions repeatedly hampered attempts to locate and recover the child.

Authorities deployed a range of resources during the search, including a police helicopter that conducted aerial scans of the surrounding area in the hope of finding any trace of the missing youngster.

The search took a significant turn on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, when vigilant community members spotted what appeared to be a human body lodged against a tree in the river. They immediately alerted the police, who responded swiftly to the scene.

Police officers, together with members of the rescue and diving team, successfully recovered the body from the river. The deceased was later positively identified by his uncle as 11-year-old Letlogang Reitumetse Mokakuoa.

The recovery has brought a painful chapter to an end for the family, who had spent days anxiously awaiting news of their loved one while search teams continued their efforts under difficult conditions.

An inquest docket has since been opened, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy will continue.

While the outcome is heartbreaking, the combined efforts of emergency services, law enforcement and community members ultimately ensured that the young boy could be returned to his family, allowing them the opportunity to begin the difficult process of mourning and healing.
