A 57-year-old former SAPS general has been arrested after police found more than 100 rounds of service ammunition at his Centurion home, years after he left the force.

The discovery was made on 6 July 2026, when the SAPS National Cold Case Unit searched the property. The ammunition included R5 and 9mm rounds, all issued by the police service. Investigators also took away documents and electronic devices that they believe could help with their probe into the murder of Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi.

National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the man left the SAPS in 2009, and that there is no legitimate reason for him to still have the ammunition in his possession.

He now faces a charge of unlawful possession of ammunition under the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000. The former general is due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court today.
