Nearly five months after the tragic death of 10 year old Akeem Williams, his mother says she is still searching for answers from Kliptown SAPS.
Akeem was killed on 9 May 2026 during a shooting in Klipspruit West that claimed two lives and left another person injured. What should have been a time for investigators to work closely with a grieving family has instead become a painful wait for information.
According to Akeem's mother, she has not been provided with the police case number and has received little communication regarding the progress of the investigation into her son's death.
For a mother who buried her child, the silence has been difficult to bear.
She says she wants to know what steps have been taken in the investigation, whether there have been any developments and why she has not been given access to basic information relating to the case.
In an effort to obtain clarity, the Lenasia Times Group of Newspapers contacted Gauteng SAPS Provincial spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi on Monday, 5 October 2026.
Nevhuhulwi referred the newspaper to Johannesburg District SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mpho Tshetlhane, who in turn requested that the questions be directed to Kliptown SAPS spokesperson Captain Hitler Ngwenya.
After being informed of the concerns raised by Akeem's mother, Ngwenya indicated that he would provide feedback on the morning of Thursday, 8 October 2026.
However, by 2pm on Thursday, no response had been received.
The lack of feedback has added to the frustration of a family already carrying the unimaginable burden of losing a child.
Tshetlhane confirmed in May 2026 that police are investigating two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder following the shooting.
According to her, unknown armed suspects allegedly opened fire in Klipspruit West at approximately 6.45pm on 9 May 2026. Akeem and a 47 year old man were fatally wounded, while a 38 year old man sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The motive for the attack remains unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
For Akeem's mother, however, this is not simply another case file.
It is the story of a little boy whose life was cut short before he had the opportunity to fulfil his dreams. It is about a family trying to come to terms with an unimaginable loss while seeking answers about what happened on the evening their world changed forever.
As the months pass, the questions remain.
A grieving mother is still waiting for information. She is still waiting for communication. Most importantly, she is still waiting for justice for her son.
