The Johannesburg Zoo will become a place of celebration, connection and cherished family moments this October as Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) invites senior citizens to enjoy free entry throughout the month.

In recognition of the invaluable role older residents play in families and communities, pensioners will be granted complimentary access to one of Johannesburg's most loved attractions by simply presenting a valid identity document at the entrance.

The initiative offers more than just a day at the Zoo. It provides an opportunity for senior citizens to reconnect with nature, enjoy the tranquillity of the grounds, spend time with loved ones and create lasting memories in a setting that continues to inspire generations.

Families are especially encouraged to take advantage of the Zoo's popular R22 admission special on 22 October, enabling grandchildren and accompanying family members to join their grandparents for an affordable day of adventure. From leisurely walks and picnic spots to encounters with some of the world's most fascinating wildlife, the day promises enjoyment for visitors of all ages.

The celebrations will continue on 27 October with a special community event in partnership with #67Blankets. Taking place from 09:00 beneath the shade of the Zoo's tree canopy, the gathering will feature unplugged music, community activations, grocery hamper giveaways and information stands from various City departments and entities, including assistance from the Revenue Department.

As part of the renowned #67Blankets for Madiba initiative, founded by Carolynn Steyn, knitters and crocheters will unite to create blankets and scarves for vulnerable and indigent residents attending the event, reinforcing the spirit of compassion and community service that has become synonymous with the campaign.

To ensure comfort and accessibility throughout the day, the Zoo's internal shuttle service will be available for senior citizens wishing to explore the grounds at a relaxed pace while visiting their favourite animal exhibits.

JCPZ spokesperson Jenny Moodley said the month-long initiative is a tribute to the city's senior citizens and an opportunity to strengthen family and community bonds.

"Our senior citizens have spent decades building families, communities and the city we know today. This initiative is our way of expressing gratitude for their contributions while providing an opportunity to relax, reconnect with nature and enjoy meaningful experiences with loved ones. We encourage families, caregivers and community organisations to help make this a memorable month for the older residents in their lives."

Moodley added that the partnership with #67Blankets highlights the importance of bringing communities together while supporting those in need.

"The Johannesburg Zoo is not only a place of conservation and education, but also a space where people connect, share experiences and celebrate community. Through this programme, we hope to create moments of joy, companionship and belonging for senior citizens across Johannesburg."

JCPZ Managing Director Thanduxolo Mendrew said the organisation remains committed to ensuring that all residents can experience the wonder of wildlife in a safe and protected environment.

"Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is committed to ensuring that every resident has the opportunity, at least once in their lifetime, to experience the wonder of seeing a lion or an elephant in a safe, protected setting. This Senior Citizens Month, we invite our older residents to enjoy the Zoo at their own pace, reconnect with nature and create treasured memories with their grandchildren."

As Johannesburg celebrates its senior citizens this October, the Johannesburg Zoo stands ready to welcome older residents through its gates, offering not only free entry, but the chance to enjoy friendship, family, nature and unforgettable experiences in the heart of the city.
