President Cyril Ramaphosa has lifted the precautionary suspension of South African Police Service (SAPS) National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, paving the way for his return to office on Monday, 19 October 2026.
The suspension was implemented in April 2026 by mutual agreement between President Ramaphosa and General Masemola following the Commissioner's appearance in the Pretoria Magistrates' Court on charges relating to the alleged contravention of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).
The development follows a decision by the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), who instructed on 15 September 2026 that all charges against General Masemola be withdrawn. The Pretoria Magistrates' Court formally withdrew the charges on 22 September 2026, effectively bringing the legal matter to a close.
With the case concluded, General Masemola will now resume his full responsibilities as National Commissioner of the South African Police Service.
President Ramaphosa has welcomed General Masemola's return and expressed confidence in his continued leadership of the country's police service.
The President also extended his appreciation to Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane, who served as Acting National Police Commissioner during the suspension period. Dimpane was commended for her distinguished service and leadership while overseeing SAPS operations in an acting capacity.
Masemola's return restores permanent leadership at the helm of the South African Police Service as the organisation continues its efforts to combat crime and strengthen policing across the country.
