A major breakthrough in the fight against international drug trafficking was achieved on Sunday, 25 October 2026, when a multidisciplinary law enforcement team seized approximately 250 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of more than R200 million at OR Tambo International Airport. The cocaine, concealed in five luggage bags containing 216 blocks, had arrived in South Africa on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, before being intercepted during routine inspection and monitoring operations conducted by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs and the Border Management Authority (BMA).
The operation highlighted the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between law enforcement agencies tasked with securing South Africa's borders and preventing illicit substances from entering the country.
Speaking at the scene, SAPS National Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe described the seizure as a significant breakthrough and praised the commitment of the multidisciplinary team involved in the operation.
She said SAPS, the BMA and SARS Customs conduct daily inspections of arriving flights, passengers and baggage to prevent drugs from reaching South African communities. According to Brigadier Mathe, officials became suspicious after identifying luggage that remained unclaimed after arrival. The bags were monitored and searched, leading to the discovery of the concealed cocaine.
Forensic experts were called in to test the substance, which was confirmed to be cocaine. Brigadier Mathe said the seizure represents a major victory for law enforcement and a significant setback for criminal syndicates involved in the illicit drug trade.
She noted that drug trafficking continues to have a devastating impact on communities across the country, particularly on young people battling substance abuse. By removing such a large quantity of cocaine from circulation, authorities have prevented the drugs from reaching local streets and causing further harm.
Brigadier Mathe added that the successful operation sends a clear message that law enforcement agencies are intensifying efforts to disrupt organised crime networks and dismantle drug trafficking syndicates operating across international borders.
Investigations are continuing to establish the origins of the consignment, its intended destination and the individuals behind the attempted smuggling operation. South African authorities are working closely with the Brazilian Federal Police through Interpol channels, sharing intelligence to trace the criminal network linked to the shipment.
The latest seizure adds to a growing list of successes recorded at OR Tambo International Airport. Brigadier Mathe revealed that 116 drug mules have been arrested at the airport over the past 24 months. In the last 12 months alone, law enforcement agencies have confiscated drugs worth more than R1 billion.
National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola commended the multidisciplinary team for its vigilance, professionalism and dedication. He said the seizure demonstrates the strength of collaboration between SAPS, SARS Customs and the BMA, reaffirming South Africa's commitment to protecting its borders and ensuring that the country does not become a safe haven for international drug traffickers.
