R21 Shooting Near OR Tambo Leaves One Dead, Another Injured

A fatal shooting on the R21 highway near OR Tambo International Airport claimed the life of one person and left another injured on Monday evening, 5 October 2026.

Police have launched investigations into cases of murder and attempted murder following the incident.

According to Gauteng SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, preliminary information indicates that the driver of a Fiat experienced vehicle trouble and contacted a friend for assistance.

The friend arrived at the scene accompanied by two other individuals. While they were attending to the stranded vehicle, unknown assailants allegedly opened fire on the group.

In an attempt to escape the gunfire, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a Jersey barrier.

The driver sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene. One passenger suffered a gunshot wound and was transported to hospital for medical treatment, while a third occupant escaped unharmed.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and no arrests have been made.

Police investigations are continuing as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.
