The South African Police Service's (SAPS) KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team has secured the conviction of three accused linked to the murder of Inkatha Freedom Party Branch Executive Committee Secretary, Mthokozisi Sithole, marking a significant breakthrough in the fight against politically motivated violence in the province.
Sithole, the IFP Branch Executive Committee Secretary for Mbabazane Ward 20 under the iLanga Libalele Local Municipality, was shot and killed outside a tavern in Weenen on 27 January 2024.
Following an extensive investigation by the Political Killings Task Team, four suspects were arrested and charged with murder as well as the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The accused were identified as Sthembiso Nkululeko Xulu, Mduduzi Mncube, who was alleged to be the gunman, Sthabiso Mncube and Sokolisa Sibiya.
According to SAPS National Spokesperson Colonel Amanda van Wyk, investigators uncovered further evidence linking the firearm used in Sithole's murder to another high profile murder case involving Thembinkosi Manana.
"The investigation also established a link between the firearm used in Sithole's murder and another murder case relating to the murder of Mr Thembinkosi Manana," said Van Wyk.
She further confirmed that Sthabiso Mncube was also charged in connection with the Manana murder. As a result, the two matters were prosecuted jointly before the court.
The court subsequently handed down judgment in both cases, finding three of the accused guilty of murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm. The convictions represent a major achievement for investigators who have been working to resolve politically related killings and bring perpetrators to justice.
The matter has been postponed to 28 October 2026, when the convicted individuals are expected to return to court for sentencing.
While welcoming the outcome, SAPS reaffirmed its commitment to tackling political violence and ensuring accountability for those responsible for such crimes.
The Political Killings Task Team remains focused on identifying, arresting and successfully prosecuting perpetrators involved in politically motivated murders. Working closely with the National Prosecuting Authority, the specialised unit continues to strengthen cases and pursue justice for victims and their families.
The convictions bring a measure of closure in the murder of Sithole and underscore ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat political killings and uphold the rule of law in KwaZulu-Natal.
