A mayor, municipal manager and chief financial officer from a municipality on the Southern Coast of the Western Cape have been arrested by the South African Police Service's Political Killings Task Team in connection with an alleged corruption case involving a municipal security services contract.
The arrests follow information received by investigators regarding claims that a businessman, who had been awarded a security services contract by the municipality, was allegedly pressured to pay kickbacks in exchange for the continuation of the contract.
Police allege that the businessman paid hundreds of thousands of rand after fearing that the contract would be terminated if the payments were not made.
SAPS National Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said the arrests demonstrate the team's ongoing commitment to rooting out corruption and holding those responsible accountable.
"The SAPS Political Killings Task Team remains steadfast in its commitment to investigating allegations of corruption and ensuring that those implicated in criminal conduct are brought before the courts. No one is above the law, and our investigations will continue without fear or favour," said Brigadier Mathe.
The three accused have been charged with corruption and are expected to appear in court on Monday, 5 October 2026.
The case is expected to draw significant public interest as investigations into alleged wrongdoing within municipal structures continue.
